Ten years ago, a bunch of teen boys started a game while waiting for their parents to pick them up from fencing practice. Little did they know that their escapist power fantasy would one day become an obsession with the Epic Poetry, Economics, Philosophy, and the cultural construction of myth.

They ran through two (and a half) editions of Dungeons & Dragons, two editions of GURPS, and a somewhat comical misstep into oWOD Mage. Players came and went, some memorable, others best forgotten, but two of us just wouldn’t let it die; at least, not until the story’s done.

Soon, it just might be. We’ve left behind the spells and +5 swords, the heroes and villains, the good and evil, the monomyth and power creep. In their place are politics, struggle, flawed men, compromise, characters, emotions, family, friendship, petty squabbles, and hazy legends. Now is the time for the final act.

This campaign has taken inspiration from among the following sources: Orlando Furioso, the Gormenghast novels, Paradise Lost, the Epic of Gilgamesh, Gerusalemme Liberata, The Sandman series, The Song of Roland, A Distant Mirror, The Thousand Nights and a Night, the Lankhmar books, Howard’s Conan, Planescape, The Muqaddimah, The Iliad, The Odyssey, The Aeneid, Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Shade the Changing Man, Gloriana (The Unfulfilled Queen), The Mists of Avalon, Alice in Wonderland, and The Worldly Philosophers.
